Overview: This book dealt with faith and how, if we have faith, we can do many things.
Just like Peter walked on the water when he was looking at Jesus, but he sank when he took his eyes off of Jesus; we also can walk on the water of life if we put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ. However, we can sink down into the depths of despair when we take our eyes off Christ and put them on this world and the concerns of life. In this life we are living in the End Times, we can get very discouraged if we look around at the world and the way things are going. We are losing our standing as a Christian nation. I think we should try to change the laws of the land that are against God and the Bible; although, we may not always be able to do that. But one thing we can do is to not let this world get us down. The lost of this world don’t want any part of what we stand for and will do all they can to drag us down. We need to protect our integrity and be an example of Christ before the world. God knows how hard it is to live in this world; Jesus lived here for 33 years. In Romans 12:2, the Bible says “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” We need to renew our minds daily and keep our eyes steady on the goal spoken of in Hebrews 12:1.
The author uses numerous references. I have heard that when some preachers preach they use little or no references, so that a person feels there is no Bible backing the preacher’s
sermon. This is not the case with Mrs. Channell. She uses scriptures on nearly every page, with most pages having several scriptures. She gives great explanations for just what these scriptures mean. She also explains some about her own life so that the reader realizes that she understands just what she is writing about.
Positives: I liked how the book started with faith and ended with faith. Our lives should be encased in faith. How will we ever get out of the boat and walk on the water if we don’t
have faith that God will take care of us? Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Negatives: I would have liked this book to have been longer than it was. I found myself reading and getting lost in what she said and then the chapter would end. However, she packed a lot of good truths into this little book.
Other Books by this Author: “The Loving Hind and The Pleasant Roe”; “Husband’s Helpmate – Returning to the Lord’s Pathway”
Final Words: I can see myself going back to reference this book over and over. With so much scripture in it, this little book reminded me of the books that have Bible references for the different issues of life. This book would be great for anyone to read, but the author targets women in at least two of her chapters. One of which is being a “Helpmate or Heartache” to our husbands. For women with children, there is a chapter on “Our Worldly Lives” and how we may think we are doing what is best for our children by putting them in social clubs and encouraging them to be part of social events because we want them to be well-rounded, but we may soon realize how worldly some social clubs are; however, by then it would be too late for our children.
When I was young I thought how nice it would be if I lived in a place where there was no sin and things were peaceful. Life would be so much easier as a Christian, wouldn’t it? Well, Heaven will be like that, but life on earth is a lot different than that. Living on this earth is a
toilsome life with many heartaches, temptations, negativity, and bitterness. Sounds really
depressing doesn’t it? If we try to live as Christians in our own power on this earth, it can be very hard and distressing and downright impossible. But God never expected us to do that! John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Another reason that we should be so adamant about living the Christian life in the power of His might is because we want the world to see Him in us. Otherwise, how can we tell the world how great things are in our lives as Christians if we’re discontent and downhearted?
If you’re not serving Christ as you should, it is not too late for you to change and come back to Him. Job 22:21 “Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.” We often hear ‘you are what you eat’ and so it is with the Christian walk, we are what we read, listen to, associate with, etc. If you watch worldly shows, read worldly literature, spend time with worldly people, you too will act worldly. On the other hand, if you are around other Christians who act like Christians, dress like Christians, talk like Christians, and smell like Christians, then you too will appear Christ-like.
We should tell our lost loved ones about Christ and how they should be saved. We have let
this go for far too long, thinking we have all kinds of time, but we don’t have much time left to warn them of their impending doom. This world is coming to an end! Gather your loved ones in while you can! The nightly news reads like the book of Revelation – what more proof do we need than this that this world will soon be no more?!
As this book ended with faith, my final thoughts will be on faith. Faith among Christians
is relying upon Christ and the truthfulness of God, as a child relies upon its parents. God cannot lie. If we trust in His Word, we will not be disappointed. (Malachi 3:10; Hebrews 10:23) Disappointments come when we try to live without faith, without God in our lives.
The Bible makes reference four times that “the just shall live by faith.” In Hebrews 11:6 we read, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
